Class 2

Welcome to Class 2

In Year 2, we are really lucky to have two teachers. Mrs Hall teaches English and Mrs Hay teaches maths. Mr Hegarty also supports us with our learning in Year 2 (when he is not teaching PE). We love working together, trying our best and being creative. Across the year, we will have lots of opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities and with Mrs Hall and Mr Hegarty in charge of PE in school, we’re sure we’ll get to take part in some sporting festivals outside of school too!

In the autumn term we will be focusing on number and place value, addition and subtraction and exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We will be designing and making our own hand puppet in design technology and exploring the world we live in geography. We’re really looking forward to our visit to Durham Cathedral as part of our history topic and we’ve got some fantastic books to read in English including Grandad’s Island, The Proudest Blue and The Barnabus Project.

Spring term will mean we are working on lots of measurement skills in maths involving money, length and height, mass, capacity and temperature. We will be exploring the question ‘What does it mean to belong in Christianity?’ in RE. In PE, we will be dancing in the style of machines and hopefully creating a wonderful routine that we can share with you.

In the summer term, children will be learning about fractions, position and direction and telling the time in maths. We will be learning some new vocabulary and short phrases about our town in French. We will be designing and making our own healthy salads in design technology and hopefully will have a trip to Saltburn by the Sea to explore the key features to help us with our learning geography. In science, we will be carrying out lots of investigations as we learn more about plants and we’ll be reading two classic chapter books to prepare us for Y3: The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me and Flat Stanley.
