Swimming

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in KS1 or KS2. We usually target pupils in years 3 and 4 with whole class swimming lessons and then any pupils who do not meet the National Curriculum standard are invited to additional swimming lessons in year 5 or 6.

These are the National Curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metre
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

In 2019-20, due to Covid-19 school closures, our Y5 and Y6 pupils missed out on their top up swimming lessons that we usually provide in the summer term. In 2020-21, none of our pupils were able to swim until the 2nd half of the summer term. In 2021-22 and 2022-23, we provided additional lessons for our Y4, Y5 and Y6 classes using some of our Sports Premium budget to support as many children as possible reach the national standard and we are pleased to see this supported our 2022-2023 results to return to pre-Covid levels.
