All schools must provide swimming instruction either in KS1 or KS2. We usually target pupils in years 3 and 4 with whole class swimming lessons and then any pupils who do not meet the National Curriculum standard are invited to additional swimming lessons in year 5 or 6.
These are the National Curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety:
– swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
– use a range of strokes effectively
– perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
In 2019-20, due to Covid-19 school closures, our Y5 and Y6 pupils missed out on their top up swimming lessons that we usually provide in the summer term. This year, we will be aiming to provide additional lessons for our 2020-21 Y5 and 6 classes in the autumn or spring terms using some of our Sports Premium budget to ensure as many children as possible reach the national standard.
